Jackson's Implant is on!

It has been awhile since I've made a post and everyone is bugging me to make a new post about Jackson's implant. We had the implant activated on July 9th. It was a two hour appointment in which they programed the implant to the appropriate setting for him and gave me instructions on how to use everything. It was so interesting. Jackson is a difficult case because his nerve didn't look very good on the scans he had done previously. So of course during the programming we tested the nerve and did not find a response. Generally, in a normal case there would be some nerve response. My audiologist thinks it will take a good amount of time before we see a good response. She is hoping after he has worn the implant for awhile the stimulation to the nerve from the implant will provoke a response. So the good news is after he had worn the implant for a week we went in again for more programming and tested the nerve again and we got a slight response. It wasn't much, but it is a good start! Other than that I really haven't noticed much difference in his behavior. There has been 3 times I can think of that I thought he may have heard something. But it is so hard to tell and it is still so early in the process. But overall, Jackson is doing well. It is a bit of a pain keeping the implant on. It is connected by a magnet. When he plays it falls off quite a bit. He likes to pull it off and put it in his mouth. Caden and Halle find it interesting sometimes too. They pull it off! It is such a hassle. When the implant falls off it will beep until it is put back on again. Hopefully with time that part will get a little easier. Here are some pictures.

Here is the implant outer piece. You can see the scar by his ear where they made the incision for the surgery. The blue piece has a microphone in it and has a magnet inside that holds it to the implant under the skin so the sound can be transferred. The blue piece is interchangeable. So I change the colors to mach his outfits. I think it is pretty cute.

This is his battery pack and settings for his implant. He wears it on his pants like a pager.
This is Jackson's monkey that the implant company gave him when he was in surgery. I think it is pretty funny. It has an implant. Jackson loves it! He plays with it all the time.

Hopefully things will continue to improve! I am glad the surgery was successful. And that monkey is pretty dang cute, as is Jackson.

Thanks for your email. Your little Jackson in such a doll. I am so glad the surgery went well, he looked so happy in every picture. It is great that you were able to get it done while he is so young. His language will be more likely to develop at a normal rate and the implant will be normal to him since he won't ever remember not having it.
Don't get too discouraged, it takes time and patience. One day he'll do something so small that will make you cheer for joy. I remember the first time Logan heard someone knock on the front door. Not only did he hear it, but he knew what it was. My husband, my older son and I were jumping up and down cheering. Things like that you'll always remember.
I wish you lots of luck in your exciting new journey. If you ever need anything...please don't hesitate to ask. Keep in touch!
